Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, with historical origins in the Academia Sinica during the Republic of China era, is the premier and the most comprehensive academic research organization and national center in the People\'s Republic of China for study in the fields of philosophy and social sciences, with the obligation of advancing and innovating in the scientific researches of philosophy, social sciences and policies. It was described by Foreign Policy magazine as the top think tank in Asia. It is affiliated with the PRC\'s State Council.

History

The CASS was established in May 1977 with the aim of promoting the development of philosophy and social sciences. It was formed by separating 14 research units of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The first president was Hu Qiaomu, and the current president is Wang Weiguang.
